Hi, my name is LaFraya. I live in Fort Worth, TX and I have been a caregiver for four years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because when I was 19, my grandmother had a stroke, and she was bedridden, and she couldn't take care of herself, and I loved her dearly, and I had to take care of her. I had to bathe her.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be, definitely to be patient and to be kind and to always think of that person as a relative or someone that you know and care about, and always treat them with the same respect that you would a friend or a relative or your family.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget, besides my grandmother, would definitely have to be a lady named Jean. She was my patient at Colonial Garden, she had Alzheimer's and dementia, and she didn't remember much, but she remembered how I treated her. She couldn't speak, but she would always smile with her eyes and clap her hands, and that definitely let me know that I was doing my job right and that I could bring a smile into someone's face. Because they may not always remember your name, but they'll definitely remember how you made them feel, and Jean's definitely was a special person before she passed away that I definitely care about a lot and I'll never forget.
