Hi, my name is LaMesha. I live in Novato and I have been a caregiver for 15 years.
What inspired you to become a caregiver?
I became a caregiver because I had disabled son and he wasn't being cared for properly, so I started working in the school district as an Aid for Developmentally Disabled Adults and Children.
What piece of advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
One piece of advice you have to have a lot of patience and a lot of love in your heart to be able to go out and help all different kinds of people with disabilities, health issues... It takes a special kind of person to do this kind of job.
Who is your most memorable client?
I had a client who was autistic and no one was able to work with her because she was very difficult. She had behavioral issues as far as hitting, spitting, biting and kicking people and she would steal food out of the refrigerator at night and would not sleep. What made our relationship so special is that I took the time out to try and understand what I could do to make her life better and make me more successful as a caregiver.
