Hi, my name is Lashanti. I live in Bryan, TX and I have eight years of experience in home health care.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because of my grandmother. I started out at a young age, helping her and her friends. And it's something I love to do, so as I got older, I started working into that field. And a few years later, I had a son that is disabled, so that inspired me even more. So, it's just something I love to do. I love being able to help those who are unable to help themselves, or who need assistance in helping themselves. That's why I became a caregiver.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be, treat others as if you would want someone to treat your loved one. I say that because the same way you want someone to treat your grandmother, your child, your mom, your sister, aunt, whatever relative that you have, if someone is coming into the home, caring for them, when you go into someone else's home, you treat them as your family member, or how you would want somebody to treat your family member.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is Damarcus, because when I went into his home and started working with him, he wanted no one in his home. Everyone he requested for, new worker, he did not like anyone in his home. And it had been two years passed, and I was still in his home, working for him, and he didn't want anyone else to come in. He requested me. He had his parents to make sure that I was the only worker there with him.
