Hi, my name is Lashawnda. I live in Baltimore City, MD and I've been a caregiver for five years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I started out caring for my grandmother when she became sick. I then took a passion and a liking for helping others out. I love working with the elderly and the disabled, so I started taking classes, general nursing classes, and from there I decided to do private home caregiving as opposed to working in a facility.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be to treat each client as if they were family, or rather treat each client as you would want someone to treat your family in regards to respect, decency, morality, all of the above. If you want someone to treat your family kindly, then do the same for them.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is Evelyn. I was her live-in caregiver and she was so sweet. She was about 90 years old when I was her caregiver. She was really sweet. She made sure I was comfortable, even though I was the one caring for her. I never had a problem or issue with her. She was really easy to work with, and I really miss working with her.
