Hi, my name is Latasha. I live in Palm Springs, CA and I have been a caregiver for over 10 years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I had to take care of my grandparents. There's something about helping my elders that I enjoy. I took care of my grandmother, my grandfather, and actually just got through my great grandmother.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be it definitely have to be something you enjoy doing. To me, it should be more like a passion because it can't be a money situation, so you can't just go into this kind of field looking at it as a job. It has to be something you care about doing so you can give your best to the resident or the patient or whoever you're helping or care for to make their life easier.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is Rodie. She was a Southern lady from Texas, and she was experiencing a lot of dementia and Alzheimer's. And she went through a lot of mood swings, so she would always go off on her husband and constantly argue, but when I came around, she was a whole completely different person. She wasn't afraid to speak her mind. She has that real comforting motherly love, which she always drew upon and her advice was always good.
