My name is Latrice, I live in Oakland, California and I have been a caregiver for two years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because my grandfather was becoming of age and his health started to deteriorate. So once his health started to deteriorate, I started to help him out a lot. And I just figure, "Hey, why not become a caregiver so that I can be licensed or have a profession in this field?"
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be to be patient and take you time and sit down and listen. Make the patient feel welcome with you, or safe around you.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A patient I will never forget is Douglas. He taught me so much while being in my care, how to be patient and how to listen. Because he was set in his ways and older. And we could have the best conversations, joke and laugh, outings, doctor's appointments. He would be the patient I will never forget because it was such a great experience. It made me want to partake and indulge more into caretaking.
