Hi, my name is Laura. I live in Carpinteria, CA and I've been a caregiver for 2 years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I was with my grandma when she fell ill, and I just feel like somebody needs to be there to support a person when they're at their worst and see them when they're at their best. And I enjoy taking care of others.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be to be patient, and understand that sometimes a disease process may cause a person to change. As a caregiver I've experienced patients that have been aggressive - that have hit or spit - and all I can do is just be patient and understanding, and not to get upset.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is a client that was very hesitant for help, but after time of spending with the person, and interacting, and establishing trust, I was able to get around that. She changed her attitude and her perception of me, and she let me help her. So I was-- just a person I will never forget.
