Hi, my name is Leakita. I live in Sausalito, CA and I've been a caregiver over 10 years.
How did you get into caregiving?
Hi, I became a caregiver because I've always found passion in helping and caring for others. My mom was also in the field, and she helped me realize when you do get older, it's harder for you to care for yourself. So by being able to give care, and do that for others it has brought joy to my heart. So for that reason I really enjoy caregiving.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be to know who you're caring for, to know about them in full detail, just so you know exactly how to care for them. Each person is different. You can't always go into caregiving with each new client the same as you did with your last. And just do your best at getting to know that client.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client that I will never forget - her name was Ann. When I first started working with her she welcomed me with open arms. Every time I came to work at 11 PM she would wait for me to help her get up, and take her to the restroom and everything. She wouldn't want her daughter to do anything with her. She said, "I will wait for you to get in." She will always have a smile on her face when I comb her hair, and put her lipstick on. And she was just overjoyed with me. Her family welcomed me as a part of their family. When she passed they wanted me to attend to their funeral, and it was just a good feeling when you know that you done your job well. And I'm still connected with their family today.
