Hi, my name is Lena and I live in San Pablo, CA. I've been a caregiver for 4 years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I enjoy being around seniors. I work with special needs kids for the last 17 years. I was introduced to seniors and what it takes to take care of them and to socialize with them and to help them with their daily living activities, and I enjoyed it, so I continued it for four years.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be to be patient and to listen. Sometimes, that's all people would like for you to do is just to listen. Let them share their stories. They have lots of stories to tell. They've lots of wisdom.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is Kate. We had so much fun together. We would laugh. We would joke. She lost both of her legs. She never complained about it. I would take her to doctor. She never complained. They would do procedures that were painful. She never complained. We would cook together. When I say cook, she would be in her wheelchair while I cooked and we would talk about things that she used to do as a child. How her mother would get after her when she was a little girl because she was a mischievous little girl. And we would laugh and joke about the things that I got in trouble for too as a little girl.
