Hi, my name is Lisa. I stay in Midway, FL and. I've been working as a caregiver going on 15 years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I like helping others making sure that they're okay. I've been working in this field ever since I was 20. I had my CNA license. And all the jobs I had was helping, always helping people. Especially elderly people, making sure they're all right because I understand how it feels to be ill. And I make sure to let them know that I'm willing, I want to help them, and that's from my heart.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver is, make sure your heart is in the right place. Make sure this is a job that you want to do, because they rely on you, and they want somebody to come into the home and make them feel comfortable and loved. They want to depend on you. Make sure you have patience and time with them because rushing them and pushing them to do something quickly is not always good. It's best to just take your time with them. Show them that you love them. Get to know them.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
My client I will never forget is Miss Taswell. You know, every time I came to work, she was always in pain, but she always kept a smile on her face. We had the most loving conversations about her past, about her kids, the things she liked to do, how she was a single parent like I was, how she never gave up her dreams. She made sure she kept working through all the pain that she endured, and now that she's at a nursing home, and she's alone when all her family remains gone, she still continues to smile and believe in God.
