Hi, my name is Leslie. I currently live in the Rancho Cordova area, CA and I have one year of experience.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I have my grandpa who is currently 89 years old and I had to take care of him for about a year, but I wasn't really being paid for it. I was just helping out. And after that, I liked it so I continued to do it and got a job in the field.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be, to be very patient if they're quiet. Many times a disease could make them grumpy, make them lash out at little things and sometimes they don't mean it. You'll have to explain things over and over and just be really patient with them.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is Peggy. She was so forgetful and never remembered anything and would make jokes all the time. And she never remembered anyone's name. But I was always able to tell her my name and when I'd come back an hour later, she'd alway remember it. It made me feel really good inside because everybody always told her their names and she'd never remembered any of them, so when I told her, she remembered mine.
