Hi, my name is Letitia. I live in Garden Grove, CA and I have been a caregiver for six years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because my mother was in a health care facility and I saw how poorly she was treated. Although my sisters and I paid, I thought that there was no respect for the elderly. After I was laid off from my bookkeeping work, I felt and thought of what I would do, and then I decided to start inquiring about caregiving for the elderly.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be, to pay attention. If in doubt, ask. Look and learn the medicines, research, talk to the doctor, explain to them what the meds are doing to your client because sometimes just a change in the medication helps that client feel better.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is a lady that I work with who was suffering from extreme depression. She slept in the same nightgown for weeks. She wasn't washing, or taking showers, or brushing her teeth, nothing like that.
