Hi, my name is Linda. I live in South Richmond Hill, NY and I've been a caregiver for 28 years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I was going to school, at first, to be a nurse, and my mom took sick, and I started taking care of my mom. And then after my mom got sick and passed away, I started taking care of my mother-in-law. She had dementia, Alzheimer's, and then I just filled out an application to become a caregiver. And I was on private duty on duty. That's how I became a caregiver.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver is, go by what the family guidelines, what the doctor says taking care of the patient, and whatever the daily duties to take care of the individual. Health, housing. Housing, I mean as cleaning up their housing. Medication, food, and shower.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client that I most remember is the patient that I had Alzheimers and dementia. Used to like to get her hair done, her nails done, and some makeup on her face, and listen to music. And then we would sit down and drink coffee.
