Hi. My name is Lindelwa Amelia Okafor
. I live in Sandusky, Ohio. I've got five years of experience as a caregiver.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I'm a very loving, caring person. I always want to see a smile on their face. I love everybody. I like the elderly. I love kids so much. I feel like I can spend a lot of my time with them so I can see that smile. I choose to share with everybody. I choose to share with disabled. I choose to share this love with kids.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver is this, love the patient. Have time for them. Listen to their feelings. Try, by all means, to provide the care that they deserve. Be there for them. Care for them. Support them. Make sure they are happy. Make sure they get what they want.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
The client that I remember is Mr. William Mr. William had dementia. I used to be live-in caregiver for him in South Africa. He used to say to me, "I want to go out shopping." While he was bedridden, he would insist that I must open the wardrobe so that he can choose nice clothes that he is going to wear when we going shopping. I would dress him, make him look nice then he would keep on telling me, "Let me go. Don't hold me. I will walk by myself," even though he was bed-ridden! But, then I would give him some food and he would totally forget about going out. After he'd finish eating, we would laugh. We would make jokes until he would fall asleep. That's what I used to love about him.
