Hi, my name is Lokalani. I am located in Vallejo, CA and I've been caregiving now for about 7 years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because my aunt fell ill and she needed someone to care for her. Our other family members were initially too busy to provide the care that she needed, so I went ahead and took on the responsibility. It taught me a lot about caring for someone. Not just someone I love, but someone in general who's in need and building a different type of companionship and friendship through that.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be to always be patient with your client, to always remember to ask them do they need anything extra - if they're able to let you know those things. Always treat them with care and build a companionship with them, not just a "I'm helping you" but a friendship further than that. Remember to treat them as if you wanted someone that you love to be treated.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will always remember is Yvonne. She was always funny, and in a good mood. There were times where, you know, she would struggle with walking and stuff like that. But we kind of built this relationship where she knew that I was able to help her. She could depend on me, that I wouldn't let her down, that anytime she needed me, even if I wasn't scheduled, I would come and be able to help her with whatever she needs. She was just always a joy to be around for the most part. We would watch television, go to out at the park, and things like that. You know she couldn't really get in the kitchen but we kind of cooked together. She'd chop things up was it was possible to do that.
