Hi, my name is Lorena. I live in Stockton, CA and I have 10 years of caregiving experience.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I had a father who was very ill and was constantly in and out of hospitals throughout my childhood and teenage years. So while he was at home, I helped and assisted my mother in providing most of his care. And since then, I had the strong desire in helping others.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be, to be very patient as well as compassionate and empathetic And to also be a very good listener and observant as many clients or patients are very new to having in-home care and can express anxiety in different forms because they're not always so forthcoming to change.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is my most recent, which I worked for over a year. Her name is Ofelia and unfortunately, she had a progressive disease that cost her to lack mobility. And due to this, she had many days where she was very sad, very down. And so my job was to bring her not only comfort but to cheer her up. And during this time, we ended up with a very close bond and she ended up moving to another city, which is a little far from where I am. But I was told by the family that she was having some trouble adjusting. So what I did is before I went on my maternity leave, I worked for her for a few months just to help her get adjusted to her new home.
