Hi, my name is Lori. I live in Gilroy,CA and I've been a caregiver for 16 years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because when I was a teenager my mother was terminally ill. I wanted my mother to know and to feel the love that I had for her. No matter how much time she had on this Earth, I wanted to take care of her and to make her happy and loved.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be in my years of experience in this field, the client that you meet are more than just client. They become family. They will touch your heart in so many ways as you will theirs. Treat them with respect, show compassion and love.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is Ruby. I cared for Ruby for a couple of years and in that time became very close to her. She was like a grandmother to me. Ruby loved my cooking and she was unable to walk but I still had her in the kitchen for advice and my helper. She was pleased to be able to participate in preparing meals or making cookies. She enjoyed when I'd bring my grandchildren over to visit. We would play games. She loved bingo especially if she won. I was able to put a smile on Ruby's face every day and that is what made me happy to make this beautiful lady smile.
