Hi, my name is Lotoya. I live in Oakland, CA and I've been a caregiver for 10 years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I was watching my mother-in-law at the time take care of her resident that lived in Walnut Creek. So I would go and visit her because she was in home care and it was okay for me to go visit. I thought that it was just amazing how good she was with her client and how happy her client and her family was. So it inspired me and I would go to just hang out with her and see what she was doing and I thought it'd be something that I could do.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be to always respect the client and always remember that they weren't how they are at that moment and they were just normal like you and I. Never forget that they were a whole different person, and always be patient.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I'll never forget is a guy that I took care of - his name was Hans and he lived in Walnut Creek. I'll never forget him because he was my very first client ever, apart from the person that I helped my mother-in-law with. He was my only real client and I would never forget him because he was so kind, he's very respectful, and he always told me - because he was very tall, he was 6'2" - and he would always tell me to sit up straight and if I didn't he would pat me on the hand and he would always say, "Honey, you have to sit up straight because you're very tall and if you don't sit straight you're going to be humped over by the time you're 50". I'll never forget him because he was so smart, he was very loving, and he was my first client.
