Can you tell me a little about yourself and how you got into caregiving?
My name is Luz Diego. I live here in San Francisco in an area called Portola District. I've been a caregiver for 25 years. I knew that I wanted to be a caregiver when my very close friend that I took care of passed away. I started going to school and got licensed for home care aide and nursing aide.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
The first person that comes into my mind is Ann. I met her at the hospital, and when she went home they hired me as their private caregiver for almost six years. After she passed away, I continued caring for her younger sister until she passed away in 2011. Ann and her family are very special to me because I feel that they love me, and they educated me about their household, housekeeping, and cooking.
What piece of advice would you give to a new caregiver?
If I could give a piece of advice to a caregiver, I believe that taking care of a client should always come first, and you must respect their household. Don't change it, just follow how their lifestyle is there.
