Hi, my name is Lydia. I live in Banning, CA and I have been a caregiver for 21 years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I realized one day I'm going to be at that age, and I have experience as a hospice and home health caregiver to the elderly. I've been compassionate through all the years of my caregiving and I'm working through Visiting Nurse Association of California and basically, I get attached to them so they become a part of me, a part of my daily living.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be, to have a compassionate heart. We have to be fully trained and also patient and unselfish. We have to put them first before others, and be loving and have a cheerful heart.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is someone I cared for who has Alzheimer's. He was very pleasant to work with, even though sometimes he has "those days" but I never took it personally because the person is no longer himself. So, like I said, he has a bad day and a good day. More importantly, we become friends.
