Hi, my name is Lydia. I live in Fort Worth, TX. And I have been doing home health and private care for 10 years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because many years ago my mother in law had a group home, and I just started working at the group home to help the families.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be to show affection, to listen, because sometimes the elderly or people that may have a physical disability feel that you're not listening to them. So listen, be sympathetic, and basically just do as much as you can to help. Help them also be active in their lives.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client that I will never forget is a client that I worked for three years ago, and I worked for her husband first and then he passed away. He had dementia. Then I began working for her, and she had dementia in the early stages. And she just was one of the sweetest and kindest women that I had ever met, and she was just so caring. And that is one of the clients that I will never forget, just her personality.
