Hi, my name is Lynette. I have been a caregiver for one year and I live in Fresno, CA.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because my grandmother, who I dearly love and raised me, became sick with dementia. She didn't have anyone to take care of her and I wanted to make sure that someone who really cares for her would really be there for her. It just broke my heart. I became a caregiver also because I care about people and I love helping people and I like to feel needed.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be, to make sure that you're in this because it comes from your heart and you really care about people not just for the money. You have to really, truly, deeply have a deep love for people and also the person that you are matched with. Make sure that your days are a good fit and that you're happy when you wake up in the morning. You have to be happy when you're going to help this person. You're going to have to be happy with the person.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is actually the one that I'm helping now. He's very patient. He's severely handicapped. He's not able to do anything for himself at all. He's patient with me when I was in training and learning how to take him from his bed to his wheelchair. He never complained. He's just really sweet and very humble. And like I said, he never complained although he can't walk, he can't feed himself, he can't use the bathroom by himself, he can't dress himself. He's taught me to not be selfish and to look at the blessing. So I'll never forget him.
