Hello, my name is Mahnaz. I have been a caregiver for six years, and I live in Oakland, CA.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I just love people and helping. I've always been a caring person. I've always cared for my family. I've always just been caring in general towards the public. So, I always knew that this was the field that was just right for me.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be patience, compassion, and understanding, and to always do your research on the disability that you're going in to work with. It's always good to know exactly the kind of services and help that the person personally is going to need.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client that I will never forget is Steve. He's brilliant. He's a genius. He has Asperger's as well as hyperacusis, which is a hearing disability that makes his audibles or, per se, his hearing be lot more increased than ours. For example, if a pin drops, it would be a lot more louder than how we hear it. We have to wear earphones all day but, I mean, this guy is just so amazing in everything that he does. I'm just very, very honored to have been his friend.
