Hi, my name is Mahogany, I live in Los Angeles, CA and I've been a caregiver for three years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because as a child, I had to take care of my grandmother when other family members wasn't able or wasn't willing to and I just like to help people so I mean I just wanted to be a caregiver because there's a lot of people out there who needs help and there's no one to help them.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be to be kind and patient because everyone has different personalities and certain people will not react to certain things as you would but you have to accept the fact that certain people need help with certain things and you'll have to be kind and patient and make sure that you're always on time.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I would never forget is William. William is about 30 years old, he's mentally ill, he does not think as a 30 year old, he thinks as if he's a child but he has a very short temper and he's very hot headed so when I was caring for him, he used to give me a hard time but one day I made him breakfast and I gave him his breakfast, he ate it and he tells me, "Mahogany, I love you, you're always nice to me, and you're my friend," and he gave me a high five and I was very shocked and surprised but it actually brought joy to me because he's safe and he's comfortable around me to treat me in a kind manner. So for that, I will always remember William.
