Can you tell me a little about yourself and how you got into caregiving?
My name is Mai. I live in Oakland, and I've been a caregiver for 9 years. I got into caregiving because I love helping people, I'm compassionate, and I'm in school right now to get my nursing degree.
What type of qualifications do you currently have as a caregiver?
I have my Home Health Aide (HHA), Basic Life Support (BLS) certifications, and I'm a Certified Nursing Assistent (CNA). I have experience working with individuals who have dementia and Alzheimer's. I also work in rehab, and I have experience working in hospice.
Who is one client whom you admire and why?
What I admire most about Catherine is that she has a good heart and she's compassionate. She can be a difficult woman to work with, but we have a good relationship and we laugh together. Her dementia was getting worse, so the family was trying to find caregivers that would come in, but they wouldn't last very long. She was fussy about having a particular one, so I was the main caregiver. She liked me, and we had a bond -- a good relationship. I managed to stay there for a long time.
What advice would you offer to a new caregiver?
If I can give one piece of advice to a new caregiver that is just starting out, I will say just be yourself. Be open minded and willing to learn, and just have compassion. Have a good heart.
