Hi, my name is Maido. I live in Santa Maria, CA and I have been a caregiver for more than 10 years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I wanted to help people. Make things easier for them. That makes it very difficult, and I became a caregiver also because I wanted to learn more about the health field because my long-term goal is to become a nurse someday. And being a caregiver, I got to help different people with different situations, and got to learn about their diseases, how to take care of it, and got to even learn about medicine, and I thought that was an awesome experience. And I was able to collect a lot of knowledge, and I believe that will help me someday.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be to be patient with the client you're dealing with because you don't know what they're really going through. You don't know how they're feeling, and if they are a little grumpy, just know that they've gone through so much, and just be patient. Listen to them and just watch how you talk to them because they can be a little snappy, especially if they're not feeling well. Just take your time with them and just be patient.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is Miss Civatate. She always had the funniest stories. She suffered from anxiety and depression, and to help her feel better, I got to know her within time, and I knew what made her happy. She liked talking about her house, her garden, and her husband, her late husband, and that sort of calmed her down. So every time I noticed she had a panic attack, I would ask her questions about her husband, and she told me how he proposed to her. They went on a first date.
