Hi. My name is Mikayla. I like in Oakland and I have been a caregiver for three years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I've always wanted to be in the medical field my whole life. I've always wanted to become a doctor. In 2006 my sister she was diagnosed with cancer and that inspired me to want to get into the medical field even more. In 2009 my younger brother was diagnosed with cancer also and I was old enough to help with taking care of him, transporting him, bathing him. Unfortunately, my sister and my brother both passed away from cancer. They inspired me to want to become a caregiver.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice for a new caregiver would be to always listen to the client. Pay close attention to the client. Don't be afraid to want to help the client I should say because some clients seem a little stubborn and they don't seem to always want your help. But you've got to help them. Always have a great attitude, positive attitude when you're going up to the door.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is Paul. I'm actually still working with him. He has cerebral palsy. He's in a wheelchair 24/7 but his attitude. He has the best attitude. When I get him ready in the morning he's always singing. So, he can't really talk so you can't really understand what he's saying but I've been working with him so I can understand what he's saying but if you were just to come in you wouldn't know what he was saying. But his attitude. He has the best attitude. He is the most positive person I know.
