Hi, my name is Malazhane Martin. I live in Vellejo, California, and I have two and half years of experience.
How did you get into caregiving?
Because my sister has a mental disability and I've always helped take care of her. Then some years later, I actually had an aunt with cancer and I actually became her caregiver. So that actually - her and my sister - helped me want to become a caregiver. I love helping others who aren't able to do for themselves. I am a people person completely and I love caregiving.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be to always enter a situation with a positive attitude, to always give good energy. Because if you have that energy, the client or the
patient will not feel the vibe, they'll shut down and they can't do things and if they are completely shutdown. So always have positive energy and let them know that no matter what, you're there for them. No matter what goes - good and bad - basically you're there to help them.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client that I will never, ever forget is-- I called her Mama. Her name is Joan, but I called her Mama Joan. She was just so kind-hearted. Every time I went to see her, she just always was, "Hey, sweet pea," or, "How are you doing honey?" It just warmed my heart. I treated her like my grandmother. We did a whole bunch of outings and we were really close - very, very close. It was just such a good experience. I loved her. I love her and I would never, ever forget her.
