Hi, my name is Maleah. I live in San Jose, CA, and I've been a caregiver for two years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because after I cared for my grandmother in her last two years of her life, I finally made a decision that every elderly should have that opportunity to be at least somewhat happy or have some companionship before they go off and go to heaven and do their thing. So I feel like I am companion, I have companionship and social skills, I have patience, and I feel like I could do the job.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be - be open, have an open heart, and know that this job isn't about the money. This is about your heart. This is about taking your time, your energy, and doing what you feel is right in helping others.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will most remember is my grandmother, Ophelia. We call her Ophie. Seeing her go through Alzheimer's and not remembering and stuff like that. And just me being with her and talking to her, seeing her smile. I know she must have had some frightening moments of not remembering.
