Hi, my name is Mamie. I live in Oakland, CA and I've been a CNA for 23 years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver after my grandmother was diagnosed with diabetic and ever since then she, you know, when started going down, I didn't want to let her go in no nursing home, so me and my mom, we all took time taking care of my grandmother, and that's why I love doing this kind of work.
What advice would you give to a new caregiver?
My advice for a new caregiver is to be a good caregiver. Treat them as you want to be treated. Treat them just like they're your mom, dad, or sister. Love them like you want to be loved. Give them the respect like you want to have respect, and treat them with courtesy like you want to be treated.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
The client I will never forget, she was a wonderful client. She loved stories, and she loved for you to listen to her stories when she was growing up. Oh, she had so many story, and it make you cry, it make you happy. She was a very, very happy person. She loved the outside, and she loved to go walking. And she loved to go to the movies. And she was a sweet person. I will never forget her and may she rest in peace.
