Hi, my name is Marcie. I live in Birmingham, AL and I've been a caregiver for the last 15 years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I want to help. I want to help the families. I want to help the person in need to stay strong and independent as long as possible and to make their lives meaningful.
What advice would you give a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be to stay very positive and very flexible. Always be open to new ideas and experiences. I believe that honest and effective communication is the key to avoiding complex, and you do want to make a difference in everybody's life. And as you make a difference in their lives, your life is changed too.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I'll never forget is Roscoe. He was moved here by his son. He was 83 years old. He moved here by his son from Colorado Springs. He did not want to move. He did not want to come here, and for the month and a half that he was here, I saw him every day for two to three hours. I took him shopping. I cleaned his room. I cooked for him. I did whatever he wanted. We went for walks, and he used to say, "You are my only friend. You're the only one who understands me." And I said-- he was a stubborn man, but he had a very kind soul. And now he's back in Colorado Springs and his guardian is taking care of him there because he was not really happy here.
