Hi, my name is Maria. I live in North Highlands, CA and I've been working as a caregiver for 15 years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver when I was looking for a family member, and then that motivated me to care for seniors, and I've been working taking care of children too. I love to take care of seniors for 15 years and I really enjoy that, to make someone happy.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be, to be patient, to be caring. It's like you care for a relative of your own. Be compassionate, and most of all you have to love becoming a caregiver, to care for someone.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is Mary. She was a patient with Alzheimer's. When I started working with her 15 years ago, she was very sad and I made her very comfortable, made her laugh and enjoy. She loved to sing and I will never forget her, the way she was holding my hand and saying, "Thank you for everything." So that is my memory of Mary.
