Hi, my name is Maria. I live in Los Gatos, CA and I have 3 years experience.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because after seeing my father fall in the hospital, that's when I decided to become a caregiver and help the elderly on their needs to make their lives easier.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be, to show a little bit more respect and more love to the elderly. Try to put your self into their shoes for even just a minute. They need a lot of care and a lot of our help. A lot of our love. Help them as much as possible but also let them feel useful and that they can do it themselves. Never put them down and always try to make them feel that they can still do things.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is Miss Robinson. She had paralysis at her right side. She was a very sweet person and very strong. I would never forget those moments I had with her, those times I pass and see her smile every time we would try to work on her right side, doing our exercises. She was so full of life, always had the warm heart. She would say "I will do it...I will move it...look! I am doing a good job!" I wwill never forget that moment. She was so wonderful, a wonderful woman. I always remember her and that moment, and everytime I work with other people, it makes me feel so good knowing that I did very well on somebody's life. This has motivated me to love my job and continue caregiving to other people.
