Hi, my name is Maria. I live in Palestine, TX and I've been a caregiver for ten years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because my grandmother had got sick. Then after that, I went on, working for nursing homes, and home health care, and assisted living.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be, to be passionate, to be considerate, and to treat them like they were your own family members, and not to be so aggressive. You have to be understanding and let them know that you care.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is a client from Jacksonville. He was really nice. He was a retired police officer. When I went there, he was really upset, because his house wasn't in order. After I got through cleaning my first day, I rearranged the kitchen, put everything away, and he ran there and was like, "Wow. I haven't seen my kitchen like this since my wife died." It was just a memorable moment. Every time I came to see him, he was so happy, and when I left, he always told me he couldn't wait until Wednesday came - when I came back to see him and do everything I was supposed to do. He just made my day. He always asked about my kids, how I'm doing, and I always asked about his family. He really just had two sons and a daughter, that really came to see him.
