Hi, my name is Maria. I live in Salinas, CA and I have more than 15 years experience.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I took care of my Mom. She had cancer. I like to help and give love and care to the elderly and to anyone who needed it. I am a nurse in Mexico and this is what I like to do. When I came to live here in California that's when I started being a caregiver. I like to help, give love, company and care to the elderly people.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be, be professional, clean, presentable, and have compassion to the client. Have a lot of patience. Understand and listen to them. Make them comfortable and make them feel how important a person they are through your love and company.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is someone who I cared for two years. He had lung cancer. I took care of him everyday - 24 hours, and looking back there are a lot of good memories. We always pray together. There were times when he would get upset because he was a widow and he'd keep saying that he already wanted to be his wife.
