Hi. My name is Marie Deslourdes, and I am a nurse assistant for approximately 20 years, and I'm living in Novato, CA.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I'm a person who got a passion and love to help people, all kind different of people. No matter old, young, kid, adult, whatever, person to have someone to help. That's my goal, helping people. And I can be something else, but I chose to be going to school to become a nurse and coming to USA, follow up my dream to become a caregiver. And that's why I am now, and I'm looking forward to continue my career as a caregiver.
What advice woudl you give to a new caregiver?
My advice to a caregiver would be like when you're caring for a person, elderly or adult or a kid, all you need is a passion. How to respect that person, how to care for that person, to have that person to become independent, helping them do things. Remind them with some kind of good history. Make them like somebody want to live, not somebody who you pushing around because you want to finish things earlier or whenever, so you need to be patient with whoever you taking care for.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
I have a client I care for. Her name is Debra, and she's a lovely person with a lot of complication like diseases. So one of them is MS. She cannot help herself, and she's dependent on me. And I know she's dependent on me. I make all my efforts to be with that person for her needs. And when I come in in the morning, I make sure she get the help she needs. She's a lovely person, real young, and she's laying in that bed waiting for me. And what I see, I see a person who depend on me, and I thank God for because somebody can count on me, and I make sure I do the help very well as she can be happy with what she's asking for.
