Hi, my name is Marie. I live in the city of Hollywood, FL and I've been a caregiver for 10 years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because of my compassion to care for those who cannot care for themselves. Along the ability to relate, I am passionate about my work and it will show. I believe in maintaining as much independence as possible, although offering as much support as needed. I am committed to ensure a safe, compassionate environment, space and respect. I humbly express life on life terms, and that common ground is what makes me a great companion and as a caregiver.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My best advice to a new caregiver would be to be compassionate about what you do. And let it show. And have patience and take it one day at a time. You might be working with someone that has Alzheimer's and dementia. You might be working with someone that's in bed all day, or you might be working with someone that just need a companion aide.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is Lyda. Lyda was like a mother to me. And she treated me like family. There was nothing that showed that I was a caregiver or somebody that was working for her because she treated me like her own daughter. And I treated her like as if she was my mom, my aunt, or my grandmother. Lyda would be a person that I would never forget. And I think she will never forget me.
