Hi, my name is Mariedith. I live in Rochester, NY and I was previously a CNA for 10 years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I love working with senior citizens, people with disability. Being able to help the client and the patient and then the family is something that makes me happy and that. It's something that I enjoy doing. I get to know the person and learn a lot from them as well and it's something I really enjoy going.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be, get to know the people you're working for. Get to know the names. Get to be able to meet the needs without being asked. Listen to their stories and do not become a caregiver if it's not something you enjoy. Being a caregiver can't just be a job or a paycheck. You have to enjoy it to be able to give proper care to those people that rely on you. And just always be there for them and be reliable because they really need that more than anything.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is Miss Claire. I met Miss Claire because I was a caregiver for her husband who passed away. The family, a few months later, called me and said they wanted me to take care of their mother. Miss Claire was very well known by everybody in that town and she was the sweetest, kindest person I ever met. I will always remember her teaching me how to plant flowers and I was very bad at planting and Miss Claire had a garden, a beautiful garden, and I will every day go out there with her to plant because it's what she loved to do. I now became a better planter because of her. I moved out of state and that's the only reason I'm no longer taking care of her, but I constantly keep in touch with her and her family and always have them in my thoughts.
