Hi, my name is Mariela Pena and I live in Riverbank, CA. And I've been a caregiver for a year now.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a CNA caregiver because I wanted to get experience working with patients. I'm a nursing student, and I also have a passion for helping people get better to the best help it can be. I just enjoy looking at their journey and helping them through hard times. And it was my dream to be an RN since I was a little girl. So I think I have the passion for it. I have the patience and it was meant for me.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be, it's going to be hard the first time. I was hard for me because there's specific things you need to learn. You need to know your patients. Just work hard at it, persevere, and don't stop, don't quit because it's very rewarding to be in someone's life and to make a change, make something positive of their life, of their situation.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is a 27 year old male. He was suffering from a disability. I got really attached to him because he was really fun to be around. He was so sweet. He just taught me a lot about life. And it was just very sweet to get to know a person and just to interact. And they let you into their life and their routine. And I'll never forget him because he taught me about patience, kindness, how to have fun. We used to sing together and laugh. It was just a fun time and a teaching experience.
