Hi, my name is Markia. I live in Cuero, TX and I have been a caregiver for two years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I enjoy working with people, especially seniors. I love the job because it's one-on-one interaction with the client. I took care of my aunt and my uncle who were both elderly and I just enjoyed working with them. I like making a difference in people's lives. I feel like, just with a simple conversation and a friendly smile then, it just brightens up their day.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be to be empathetic. Be mindful that the client may be scared, vulnerable, confused, and uncomfortable because they really don't know you yet. So just be empathetic and build a trust with the client. Also, to have patience. Sometimes you may work with a client that has Alzheimer's and they may be forgetful but just be patient with them and don't get easily frustrated.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is Mrs. Blackwell. Mrs. Blackwell was a friend of my family and she went to school and she was best friends with my great-grandmother. So when I worked with her, she would always have these amazing wonderful stories about my great-grandmother and their childhood. It was just always so interesting to listen to her. She made my day so great and I was able to do the same in return for her. I miss her and I loved her. The first thing that comes to my mind when I think about Mrs. Blackwell is her smile.
