My name is Marqueisha and I live in Suisun, California and I have been a caregiver for 2 years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver in the results of caring for a loved one who was sick and it really inspired me that I love to take care of people whether it's little, whether it's big, it motivates me. I love to help take care of people as much as I can when I can.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be to build a relationship and that way your client can trust you and feel comfortable with you. You want your relationship to be positive and not negative. You want to be able to [vibe?] with your client instead of your client pushing you away, you want to feel wanted. And in that case, everything will go over smoothly won't have any issues, you trust one another, you guys build that relationship so that way you have that bond that is unbreakable. But at the same time, you have to keep it professional no matter what.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget, her name is JoAnne. And one thing rememberable about JoAnne was when I met her her favorite word was can't. She would tell me every day she couldn't do something no matter what it was. If it was laundry, if it was taking the trash out, if it was putting her shoes away she would tell me she can't. So over time I worked with JoAnne to help her realize that she can and over the year instead of saying, "I can't," she would tell me, "Keisha, I can." Which made me feel good because I helped her make a difference. And it made her feel good to where she would smile, she would laugh, she would talk about what she can do versus what she can't do. So that was something big for me but not only big for me but bigger for my client and their accomplishments and goals that they wanted to reach. So it made me feel really good and emotional all at the same time.
