Hi, my name is Martha. I live in Fresno, CA and I have been a caregiver for 1 year.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver working in Madera in homes for elderly or special needs people. It grew in me since I didn't grow up with my grandparents, I thought I would make someone's day, and that's how I started. I had my regular job, and I did that on the side part time.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be, do what you would like someone to do for you. Remember, we're all going that way, and the years will go by us. And before I had my own children, I always worked at schools, and I always said to myself, "I'm going to treat these kids like one day I want someone to treat when I have my own."
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client that I'll never forget is Edna. She was one elderly lady. She was very sweet, she was very smart, and she always had this toy with her. She'd want it at dinner time, and as soon as she finished, and then she would go to the living room, and she wanted that toy. That was like her comfort, so I always tried and make sure the other client wouldn't take it away because that was her comfort. And I'll never forget her. She was just very sweet. Nothing made her uncomfortable except when any of the other clients around her would try to take that toy away. Later on, I found out she had surgery and a week later, she passed away, and it really hit me because you get connected, and they're like family. So I will never forget her. Such a sweet, smart lady.
