Hi, my name is Mary. I live in Corpus Christi, TX and I have been a Certified Nursing Assistant for 10 years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I watched my aunt go through cancer in the hospital and there was nothing I could do about it to help her. So, from that day forward, I decided that caring for people is what I wanted to do. So I went to school and got my Certified Nursing Assistant, and I've been caring for people ever since.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver is to make sure that when you get to work before you start your day, you make sure you have everything you need, such as a pencil, a notebook, and write down everything you do. The times you check for medications, the time you check vitals, any time you change them, when you bathe them. This way you have a record down and can prove to anyone this is what the job calls for, this is what I've done. I even went beyond and went and made groceries, went and picked up some prescriptions, even called a nurse. Just make sure you do everything that you're supposed to do to the best of your ability.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is Donna. I took her to her doctor's appointment on May 26th, 2016, and the doctor began to tell her that she was doing so much better, that she didn't need a nurse, a CNA, home health, she didn't need anyone, that she could return to her daily routine on her own. That was the best news I got the whole month.
