Hi, my name is Mary Jean. I live in Foothill Ranch, CA and have five years experience.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because of my grandmother. She raised me ever since my parents separated. Then I became the family's breadwinner. I also took care of my grandmother until her passing. She loved me to death and that's the very reason why I care about mostly the seniors. It's because of my grandmother who loved me to death. She is my heart and I am her's. Every time I take care of seniors, it always reminded me of my grandmother.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice for a new caregiver would be, you must love what you're doing because as we grow older, we should know that everybody needs help and care. You should love your work and be dedicated because we all grow old. Treat the seniors as you would want to be treated.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is Jim. He taught me well in English because as a foreigner and new in this country, my English grammar wasn't that good. Because he is an English professor for 50 years in Long Beach, he taught me well. Before Jim, I also took care his wife who had breast cancer. I took care of her for three weeks and when she passed away, I then cared for him for almost two years.
