Hi, my name is Mary. I live in Monrovia, CA and I've been a caregiver for about 10 years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I enjoy working with the elderly population. I worked in nursing homes and as a home health aide when I was younger, and I also helped care for my grandmother who had Alzheimer's, and I still have private caregiving job and have done other private caregiving jobs throughout the years.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be really listen to the family, and listen to the patient if they are able to explain to you what they want done, and also try to treat them like you would your own family member. How you would like your mother or grandmother treated. Explain to them everything you're going to do in advance slowly, so that they can try to understand what is coming next in the caregiving routine. Be happy. Have fun, like some old songs. Find out what they like, but most of all listen to the family and the patient if you can. If they are able to communicate with you.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is my grandmother. We cared for my grandmother for many years. Brought her into the home, with early stages of Alzheimer's, and up until the end we had so much fun with her all through the stages. Some good times and some sad times, but she was just a joyful lady, and we found little activities and things that she liked to do, and we had fun with her.
