Hi my name is Maurice. I live in Fallbrook,CA and I've been a caregiver for over four years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I have a natural passion to take care of people and at a tender age, I lost my grandparents and since then, it's been a passion with me to take care of people and as a result, I've served in the military as a hospital assistant to take care of people. So I have a natural position to take care of people and that is why I want this position.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver is to be patient toward the person you're giving care to and to communicate effectively and also to be able to empathize with whoever you're taking care of, and just try to make a difference in the lives of people. When you try to make a difference in the life of whoever you're taking care of, it brings a kind of connection between the two of you where you're able to care of whoever you're taking care with, with all your heart and with your innermost passion and it helps you to excel and also make an impact in the life of others. That is the advice I have for a new caregiver.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I'll never forget is the client that I was taking care of and she was a cancer patient. Then she came to the hospital and I was supposed to perform a CT scan on her and as I helped her from the gurney to the CT bed, I looked into her eyes and I could see her yearn or her desire to be taken care of. She needed reassurance which I really did good at and I told her, I was like, "Maam, don't worry. I'm here to take care of you." and then she just gave me a smile and then all she could say was, "Thank you." That really meant a lot to me because at that point, I felt I was able to connect with her, kill her fears and let her know that I was there to take care of her and she had nothing to be afraid of and that reassurance and that smile she gave me was just enough for me. Since then, it's been in my heart. It's always with me, how to make a positive impact in the lives of others.
