How did you get into caregiving?
The person who inspired me to become a caregiver was my mom. She raised us in the nursing homes she worked in, so I have always loved the elderly.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
The client I'll never forget, the first day I walked in and met her, she was this southern little spitfire lady. I just fell in love with her instantly. At the end when she couldn't remember anyone's name, she knew my name.
What have you learned from your clients?
What I learned most was how to sweet talk and how to get Alzheimer patients to cooperate with redirection.
Are there any caregiving tips you can share?
One piece of advice I would have for new caregivers is when you go to a new clients home, espically for the first time, do everything their way. It makes everything easier, even as simple as where do they want to put a dish away or how they want their pillow fluffed. It just makes it more comfortable for them.
