Hi, my name is Melaia. I live in Daly City, CA. I've been a caregiver for 15 years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I love working with elderly. I was with my grandparents and when I came into this country it was the only job I was doing, taking care of elderly people. It's been like 13 to 14 years now working as a caregiver and I like it.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to new caregivers is always take care of clients first. Make sure the clients are always in a safe environment and make sure the house or wherever you are is always clean at all times, personal hygiene, and the food is always warm. If you're cooking make sure the food is always healthy food and healthy diet. They should be cared, take good care of clients, and pay attention to their daily needs.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
The client that I won't forget is Loise. She's such a lovely lady. We had a good bond because I've been working with her for quite a while and I do everything for her because she was bed bound and all I have to use is a hoyer lift to transfer her from her bed to go take a shower and from there she goes into her family room where she has to practice. She loves to share her good stories growing up in Minnesota and being a teacher, she taught me a lot about the United States, all the history. I'm from a different country and she really taught me a lot especially coming from a small place. And coming to America is like something big, something new so she taught me well, what kind of food to cook and all those things. I'm glad I worked with her because now I know how to cook all different recipes, American recipes and I miss her. She has taught me a lot of things.
