Hi, my name is Melanie. I currently live in Arcadia, and I have had three years of caregiving experience.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver for the reason that I really enjoyed helping people. Straight out of high school I knew that I wanted to do a nursing or the medical field or be in that route. And when I was 18, I graduated from a certified nursing assistant program, and I got a job right away, and I enjoyed it. And I think that I do a pretty good job in caring for people, not only physically, but mentally.
What advice would you give to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver is to realize that caregiving is not just a job, it's a big responsibility to take care of someone physically and mentally. To not think of it as this is a stranger that I'm taking care of because this stranger is someone's mom, grandpa, this person is very dear to someone, and it's important to treat our elderly with respect and care as you would for our own family members.
Who was one of your most memorable clients?
My first client, her name was Clara. She was so lively for being an 101-year-old person, and she had the brightest blue eyes, just the most heartwarming personality. Her favorite song was You are my Sunshine. At random times she would burst out singing the song and I would join, and now I really love the song. She has, unfortunately, passed away, but whenever I hear that song I think of her. She didn't care about the bad things that were going on. She knew she was sick, yet she was still able to smile through everything and I will never forget her.
