Hi, my name is Melanie. I live in Sacramento, CA and I have been a caregiver for two years now.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I helped my grandmother when she was really ill with cancer. And she had lymphedema in her lower legs, in her arms. I did most of the cooking and the cleaning. I took her to her appointments. I bathed her, dressed her, and things like that.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to new caregiver would be, to be very patient with lots of patients because they're new and you're new and it will take time to know one another. I think it's important to listen to the patient so that you can have a full understanding who they are, and what their needs are, and where they're coming from.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client that I will never forget is someone that I didn't necessarily help in caregiving but it was an elderly woman that I helped while working a different job. She always just stood out to me because while I was working she came into my job and she was probably about near 70's or so.
